M. Arlene Phelps

Laconia----Mrs. M. Arlene Phelps, 94, of 12 Sanborn Street, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Saturday, October 18, 2003. She was the widow of Wesley C. Phelps who died in 1981.

Mrs. Phelps was born January 11, 1909 in Laconia, the daughter of Earle and Helen (Marston) Doran. She was a life long resident of Laconia.

Mrs. Phelps graduated from Laconia High School in 1928 and also from Plymouth Normal School, Plymouth, in 1930. She started teaching in a one room school house in 1930 in New Hampton, followed by a two room school house in Gilmanton Iron Works. She later taught in Newmarket. Mrs. Phelps taught third grade for many years at the Gilford Elementary School, Gilford, retiring in 1971.

Mrs. Phelps was a long time member of the Laconia Congregational Church. She was a Sunday school teacher for many years and was a honorary deaconess. She was also a member of D.A.R., the Lakeport Woman's Club, The Laconia Historical Society and a member of the Retired Teachers Assoc.

Survivors include 2 sons Brian E. Phelps of Laconia and David R. Phelps of Hudson; 4 grandchildren Katherine Phelps of Jefferson, Daniel Phelps of Gilmanton, Andrew Phelps and Meredith Phelps both of Hudson; one great-grandson Aiden Daniel Phelps of Gilmanton.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday October 21, 2003 from 6-8 PM at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, using the Carriage House entrance.

Funeral services will be held at the Laconia Congregational Church 18 Veterans Square, Laconia Wednesday at 11:30 AM. Burial will be held at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Gilford Wednesday at 2:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Laconia Congregational Church, Dorcas Fund, 18 Veterans Square, Laconia, NH 03246 or to the American Cancer Society, Centralized Memorial Processing Center, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701-9376.
