Belmont, NH----Valentine B. McCormack, 90, of 11 Highcrest Drive, Belmont, NH died at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia on Saturday, October 25, 2003.
Mr. McCormack was born March 14, 1913 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of John and Anna (Nixon) McCormack. He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor Nellie(Barkley) of 63 years in April, 1999.
Val worked as a shipbuilder foreman during WWII at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Brooklyn, NY. He worked in public relations for Elco Beverage, Bristol, CT. He was also public relations chairman and a founder of the Bristol Chrysanthemum Festival for many years. He was membership chairman for the Bristol Chamber of Commerce for 22 years and was very influential in building the organization. He was director and "MC" for the Miss Bristol Pageant; a co-founder of the annual sports banquet honoring Bristol athletes and local sports figures. He was the fund raising chairman for more than twenty years for the American Cancer Society, United Way and for St. Anthony's Church, Bristol.
Val was honored at a "Retirement Roast" in 1975 as he retired from his position at radio station WBIS. Many local organizations thanked him for his hard work and dedication to the community organizations. The dinner was attended by 350 people including the Governor of CT.
Val was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in Belmont, NH
Survivors include two daughters, Merlyn McLelland and her husband Donald, Sr of Belmont, NH: Valerie Bruce and her husband Robert of Tempe, AZ: a foster daughter, Nancy Damn and her husband Al of Nashua, NH; thirteen grandchildren, Donna McLelland, Donald McLelland , Jr. and David McLelland, Sr all of Belmont, NH, Debra Knowlton of Hopkinton, NH, Dawn Cilley of Northfield, NH, Sharon Kalber and Christopher Bruce both of AZ, Robert Bruce and Michael Bruce both of Bristol, CT, Keith Bruce of CA, Susan DeCarolis of MN, Coleen Fossum of ND and Natasha Bruce of IN: twenty-nine great grandchildren and one great great grandchild: many nephews and nieces; Besides his wife and parents, Val was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters "Dad was a devoted and loving husband, father, grand-father and great grandfather. He will be remembered with love.".
Calling hours will be held on Monday, October 27, 2003 from 7-9 PM at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia, NH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 28, 2003 at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Church, 96 Main Street, Belmont, NH.
Calling hours will also be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at the Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Avenue, Bristol, CT, from 7-9 PM,
Friends and family are welcomed to gather at the Funk Funeral Home at 9:30 AM followed by a graveside service on Thursday, October 30, 2003 at 10:30 AM at the St. Joseph&Mac226;s Cemetery, 522 Terryville Avenue, Bristol, CT.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Community Health and Hospice, 780 North Main Street, Laconia, NH 03246.
