Jessie Smith Naylor

Gilford---Jessie Smith Naylor, 92, of 166 Gunstock Hill Road, Gilford died February 12, 2006 at Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia after a brief illness. She was the widow of Howard B. Naylor who died in 1994.

Jessie was born September 18, 1913 at High Maples Farm on Morrill Street, the seventh child of Samuel W. Smith and Winifred Page Smith. The family ultimately included 10 children: Esther Smith Weeks, Judge Royal W. Smith, Edna Smith Berquist, Forrest A. Smith (all of Gilford), Frances Smith Wooldridge, Ellen Smith Page, Annie Smith Dowling, Dr. Robert S. Smith and Gardner P. Smith. All predeceased Jessie. The life of the Smith family, who farmed in Gilford for nearly a century, is recounted in the High Maples Farm Cookbook, by Edna Smith Berquist.

Jessie Smith Naylor graduated from Laconia High School in 1932 and from the McLean-Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing in 1936. A private patient asked Jessie to accompany her to Stamford, Connecticut and it was there that Jessie met and married Howard Naylor. They resided in Connecticut until their retirement in 1971.On re-establishing residence in Gilford, Jessie became active in supporting efforts to preserve Gilford history and institutions. One such endeavor was the installation of a granite stone to mark the site of the first school in Gilford on Schoolhouse Hill Road. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the Founders and Patriots of America, the Huguenot Society and a life member of the Thompson-Ames Historical Society.

Jessie Naylor is survived by her children, Mary Ellen Connell of Washington, DC and Howard B. Naylor Jr. of Wilton, CT, by her grandchildren Piers Connell and Elizabeth Naylor and by an extended family of nieces and nephews and their children.

There will be no calling hours.

A funeral will take place at Saint James Episcopal Church, 876 North Main Street, Laconia, NH on Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at 10:30AM. The Rev. Hays M. Junkin, Priest-in-charge of the Church, will officiate.

Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Gilford in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation in memory of Jessie Naylor be sent to the Trustees of the Trust Funds, Town of Gilford NH 03249 marked for the Samuel and Winnifred Smith Fund supporting the Gilford Public Library.
