James W. O'Brien

Gilford, NH------- James W. O'Brien, 74, of Gilford, NH died at the Genesis Eldercare Network, Laconia Thursday December 25, 2003.

Mr. O'Brien was born July 14, 1929 in Lynn, MA the son of William and Veronica (Olshefska) O'Brien. He graduated from Lynn Classical High School, Lynn, MA in 1948. He had been a resident of Gilford for over 20 years, coming from Saugus, MA.

After graduation from high school he became the youngest sportswriter for the "Boston Post" and in 1954 became the Yachting editor of the Post. In 1964 he was employed by the Boston Herald. He performed water sports at Cypress Gardens in Florida and later was employed by Brunswick Intl.

Mr. O'Brien was the founder of Lynn Mercury Outboard in Lynn, MA and later was employed by Trojan Boats. He was a member of the Board of Directors of D & D Yachts in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. In 1976 he was involved with the tennis tournament at the Longwood Brookline Country Club.

Mr. O'Brien was the director of the largest boat show in the East the New England Boat Show at the Commonwealth Pier Expo Hall, how the Bayside Expo for many years. He retired early and became Director Emeritus of the New England Boat Show. In 1982 he was the manager and host of the Cherrystone Lobster House in Gilford, NH and also managed the Lakes Region Limousine Service.

Mr. O'Brien loved boats, boat shows and was an avid NASCAR fan.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years Rita (MacKenzie) O'Brien of Gilford; a daughter Elizabeth O'Brien of Hampton Falls, NH ; a son James W. O'Brien, Jr. and his wife Donna of Essex, MA; 3 grandchildren Rory, Meaghan and Marybeth all of Essex, MA.

Calling hours will be held on Monday December 29, 2003 from 7-9 PM using the Carriage entrance of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant Street, Laconia.

Services will be held at the funeral home Tuesday December 30, 2003 at 11:00. Spring burial will be in Bayside Cemetery. Laconia.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of New Hampshire 66 Hanover Street, Suite # 101, Manchester, NH 03102-2230.
