Belmont------Russell W. Cushing, 84, of 106 Perkins Road, Belmont died on Monday, April 12, 2004 at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia, NH.
Mr. Cushing was born in Belmont, NH on June 4, 1919, the son of Russell H. and Carrie (Wyatt) Cushing. He was a life long resident of
Belmont and graduated from Belmont High School. He attended U. N. H. for a year before joining the U. S. Navy and served during WWII as a radio technician from May, 1944 through January, 1946. He was employed by New England Telephone Co. for thirty-four years, retiring in 1981.
Mr. Cushing was a long time and active member of the Belmont Baptist Church and served as Church treasurer for many years. He was superintendent of South Road Cemetery for many years.
Mr. Cushing was an avid downhill skier and served on the Gunstock Ski Patrol for several years. He was a member of the “70+ Club” and skied up through age 82. For many years, he made several hikes each spring into Tuckerman’s Ravine to ski the Bowl.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ethel (Page) Cushing of Belmont; a son, Wyatt P. Cushing and his wife, Patricia, of Loudon; a daughter, April C. Springfield and her husband, Randall, of Hollis; four grandchildren, Kristin Cushing of Concord, Melinda (Cushing) Mazzola of Loudon, Jeremy T. Springfield of Hollis and Kent G. Springfield of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Carol O’Neal of E. Weymouth, MA and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by a daughter, Sandra L. Malinsky, of Ottawa, Ontario who died January 1, 2003, a brother, Murray Cushing, a sister, Marjorie Udall, and a foster brother, Thomas Murphy.
There will be no calling hours.
According to Mr. Cushing’s wishes, a graveside service will be held at the family lot in South Road Cemetery, Belmont. Rev. Charles Crook, pastor of the Belmont Baptist Church, will officiate at the graveside service which will be held on Monday, April 26, 2004 at 11:00AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Belmont, 49 Church Hill, Belmont, NH 03220.
